Why should you use sealed or shielded bearings?

• 20 years ago, grease shielded bearings were not applicable to high speed spindle design because the lubrication technology was not available.  Now, with greatly improved lubricants that have increased longevity and improved cooling and lubricating properties, shielded bearings are the best way to assemble most high speed spindles.  Shielded bearings assist in preventing contaminants from entering the bearing at assembly, or during operation.  The grease is also prevented from exiting the bearing area before the lubrication has a chance to be fully utilized.  Also, the shielded bearing ensures the proper amount of grease is applied to the bearing.  No more over-packing by the technician.

Why should you use ceramic ball bearings?

• Although more expensive, ceramic ball bearings are proven to run cooler, with less vibration.  The ceramic ball is harder and smoother by design than a steel ball, making the coefficient of friction less.  Also, as a steel ball wears, the ball tends to gall against its' mating steel bearing race.  There are no galling properties between a ceramic ball and a steel race, so this issue is eliminated.  These features offer the benefits of longer spindle life, and improved cutting operations for your high speed spindle.
